Berriman Playground at GATEWAY ESTATES
Location: EAST NEW YORK, BROOKLYN, NY
Client: NYC Parks

At Gateway Estates, a one-acre barren landfill site was transformed into a vibrant park. The unconventional design utilizes lush plantings to define play spaces, walking paths, and seating areas. Nancy Owens Studio developed the design in the context of the New York coastline and the Jamaica Bay ecosystem. Stormwater will be managed on-site through an integrated approach of surface and subgrade infiltration, following green infrastructure practices and traditional detention methods. The park includes a unique comfort station designed by nARCHITECTS, an expansive adventure playground and an interactive water play feature.

A series of flexible open spaces provide a framework for the programmed play features. Design elements are incorporated into a composition that weaves orthogonal geometry with organic forms. Elevation changes provide opportunities for a varied experience and multiple vantage points within the park, while maintaining universal accessibility.  A water spray feature occupies a multifunctional space that is playful and interactive in the summer months and unobstructed in the cooler months, maximizing the potential for free play.
